KRISTIAN M. JOHNSON
Originally from Columbus, Georgia, Kristian Johnson is a junior/senior majoring in Political Science with a concentration in International Studies and a minor in Spanish and American Religion.
His style can be described as colorful, comfortable and classic.
Pinterest, TikTok fashion and KPOP are where Johnson pulls majority of his inspiration from. "I listen to a lot of KPOP music and they have different styles and I like how they can put a different color or different piece of clothing on and it seems to fit no matter what."
Of all the KPOP groups, TWICE and IZ*ONE , South Korean girl groups are his go- to artists. "They wear bright colors. They wear whatever they feel like. Even if they wear black, there's always a pop of something and that's what I like, a random pop of color even if everything else is muted."
Orange and neon aren't colors that Johnson is seen in often but pastel and neutral colors are more his preference.
His closet is filled with many thrifted and online shopping items. "I do shop in person depending on what I'm looking for." Stores like PacSun and ASOS are his favorite online stores. "When it comes to shoes, it just depends on how I'm feeling. It could be any place.
When discussing in- person shopping, Johnson says, "I do think that Walmart has a lot of things that people aren't really open to looking at. I like Tillys and sometimes I go into women stores because I think that fashion doesn't have a gender and clothes doesn't have a gender. If I like it and it's labeled as a girls clothing item, I'm still going to grab it."
It was about 2 years ago that Johnson started to put more thought into what he was wearing. His closet in the past consisted of mainly hoodies, ripped skinny jeans that didn't fit him and new name brand shoes. "I just wore what I thought would let me blend in."
He walks us though when his eyes finally open and he started being himself.
"It was around COVID-19 and I had no one but myself to be around. That's when I really started being more confident and loving myself, which I think is very important when wearing clothes. Your clothes reflect how you feel about yourself. I used to wear dark clothing that didn't have any designs, which is fine for other people, but I knew that that's not how I wanted to wear clothes. I had to learn to like myself and find the clothes to fit it."
Johnson typically dyes his hair, but hasn't done so since the summer. "I do notice that when I do dye my hair, especially in a pattern, I usually go for more outgoing outfits, but if it's just a regular color dye, it's slightly more muted and I let my accessories do the talking."
On the topic of accessories, rings, bracelets, hats and glasses are some of Johnson's favorite. "I think accessories really pull an outfit together."
With all the growth he's experience within the past two years, I couldn't finish this article without asking Kristian what advice he'd give individuals seeking to come out of their shell and embrace change and he shared, "I think that you should be scared of what you wear. I think that it's very important that when you're picking out clothes that you like, you need to know how you feel in it. When you wear something and people give your compliments or looks, start figuring out how you feel about it. Start noticing if you like the looks that people gave you or the fact that no one gave you attention but you still felt good wearing something."
